How is it performed?
The surgery can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, and its duration is approximately 1 to 2 hours.
There are two main types of mentoplasty:
Augmentation mentoplasty
A biocompatible silicone implant is placed or the chin bone is advanced using osteotomy to project and define it.
Reduction mentoplasty
A bone filing or reshaping is performed to reduce the volume of a prominent chin.
The incision can be made inside the mouth (without a visible scar) or under the chin, depending on the technique and the patient's anatomy.

Mentoplasty - Recovery
Recovery is usually quick and manageable. The first few days may involve swelling in the chin, a feeling of tightness, or numbness, which progressively disappear.
A soft diet is recommended during the first few days, along with avoiding excessive talking and keeping your head elevated to reduce swelling.
Most patients can resume light activities between 5 and 7 days, and the result begins to be noticeable between the second and third week.
The final result is consolidated between 6 and 12 weeks, once the face has healed completely.
